BABRI DEMOLITION: CONSCIENCE OF THE FIESTY CHO

I have always admired Cho Ramasamy, the late Editor of 'Thuglak Magazine'. He was a multi talented personality and a role model for many. He was someone who was clear in his thoughts, his actions and never compromised in his stand. Cho donned many hats in his life time, but what made him very  popular was his magazine ‘Thuglak’ which was started in 1970’s. I was introduced to ‘Thuglak’ magazine by my father, what attracted me was the cartoon on the cover page & since my childhood I have been a fan of ‘Thuglak'. Unlike other magazine’s ‘Thuglak’ had a very different way of conveying a message on its cover page. The cover will be filled with satire and the cartoon will sum up the most complicated issue in simple terms for the reader.

After becoming a full time journalist I started following Cho Ramasamy closely and would keep an eye on his take on all major issues. No matter what...he would say what's honest and on his mind. One may agree with his view or disagree but one cannot ignore his views completely.

He was one of the journalists who faced the wrath of Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi and several threats to shut down his magazine. Despite threats he refused to bow down nor change his views. In the end, those who tormented him always came around and became friends with him. Cho was often outspoken and had the guts to call a spade a spade...That's what makes Cho Ramasamy stand apart from the rest.

Recently, I happened to read 'Thuglak' magazine dated 15-12-1992. This issue was released just days after the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. 'Thuglak' is known for its cover page cartoon and I have heard that Cho 'blacked out' 'Thuglak' cover page protesting against Emergency and he repeated the same during 1992, after the demolition of Babri Masjid. This edition of 'Thuglak' is historic for multiple reasons, despite being close to BJP, RSS leaders Cho never hesitated to criticise them. I was surprised after reading his take on Babri Masjid demolition, he termed Babri Masjid demolition as the most barbarous act.

Since it's in Tamil, I have tried to translate the article so that the nation knows - why Cho Ramasamy was one of the greatest journalists of our times.

ATROCITY IN AYODHYA

"As a practicing Hindu, I too hang my head in shame for this act by Hindu fanatics"

An atrocity has happened in Ayodhya…

BJP, RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal and other Sangh Parivar affiliates have demolished a Mosque.  A most barbarous act has been completed in the name of Kar Seva.

The assurance of the BJP that the Mosque will be protected has been thrown to the wind.   The written assurance given by the Uttar Pradesh BJP government before the Supreme Court has been thrown to dustbin.   A senior counsel who appeared on behalf of the Uttar Pradesh government declared before the court “I hang my head in shame”.

Just for the sake of a few votes in the name of Ram Temple, BJP has done a huge damage to the nation. Excuses may follow now…RSS members tried to prevent the Kar sevaks, but they couldn’t.   VHP members pleaded, but it didn’t work. BJP members begged the Kar Sevaks to stop, and they failed. But these are all just empty words.

Were these organizations in their sane mind when they gathered this fanatic crowd? Where did their humanity go while they shouted mindless slogans to ‘bring down the   Mosque?’  Where did their responsibility hide when they shouted in high pitch that ‘courts have no jurisdiction in Ram Mandir issue’?   These people conveniently shift the responsibility after actively mobilizing the crowds in thousands in the disputed site.

As a journalist who has never seen these Kar Sevaks even once was able to quite easily sense that there is every possibility of the Mosque will be demolished.  It is unbelievable that the BJP, RSS & VHP outfits which mobilized the crowd were not aware of the impending danger. Of course they knew. Their mad obsession for votes made them ignore public interest.

Media reports say that BJP President LK Advani had instructed the Kar Sevaks to obstruct the central reserve forces, if they try to intervene. The BJP, VHP leaders while terming the demolition as ‘unfortunate’ also add that this is a reflection of pent up emotion of Hindus. Are they trying to say that when the pent up emotion is released they turn into barbarians? What sort of nonsense is this?  It is unfortunate even after such a catastrophe no realization has dawned on them.

In another instance, a BJP MP elected from Delhi told a BBC correspondent ‘We don’t regret demolition of the Babri Masjid. It is a structure of shame which should have gone long back.  A symbol of shame is removed’.   Persons like this should not find a place in parliament.

BJP, VHP, RSS & Bajrang Dal are collectively responsible for the gory incident that happened in Ayodhya.  Each hit on the demolished Masjid is a hit on humanity and Hinduism.  It would take a very, very long time for the Hindu religion to come out of this shame.   The whole world would think, India is a country of barbarians. Hindu religion which is known for its tolerance, open mindedness has been put to shame.

Following the demolition of the Mosque, violent communal riots have begun in several parts of the country.   Even when the Masjid was brought down, several Kar Sevaks lost their life in the debris.   Some Hindu temples were attacked and destroyed in Pakistan and Bangladesh.  India is hanging its head in shame before the world community.  What is the reply of the Sangh Parivar affiliates for this humongous shame they have heaped on us?  If the pent up emotion is the reason for demolition of the Mosque, is it the basis for the communal riots too?  The barbaric mob which demolished the Mosque and the BJP, RSS & VHP leaders have destroyed India’s pride, prestige and our cherished history in one day

It may be true that VP Singh drove BJP towards Mandir politics. But subsequently, the BJP failed to capitalize every opportunity it was given to advance alternative politics.   But, the party consciously chose to ignore these opportunities and believed only the Mandir politics would fetch votes.   Due to this avoidable route that the party adopted, it was forced to become a slave before this fanatic crowd, which resulted in the Ayodhya fiasco.

Though I had taken a tough stand against the BJP’s stand on Babri Masjid, I had continued to appreciate the discipline of the party, and the integrity of its leaders.   I had several times mentioned that the BJP can become a strong alternate for the ruling Congress.   But my belief in the party’s leadership is shattered today.   They have proved that they only know how to ignite a fire and do not know how to control or douse the flames. It is the BJP’s responsibility to change this perception.

In the Supreme Court, the counsel for Uttar Pradesh government hung his head in shame.   As a practicing Hindu, I too hang my head in shame for this act by Hindu fanatics. As a Hindu, I extend my whole hearted apologies to Muslims and minorities for the atrocities committed by Hindu barbarians.

A FEW WORDS TO MUSLIMS…

"It is true that the perpetrators of mosque demolition are Hindus.  But it doesn’t mean that the majority Hindus relished and enjoyed the act"

Muslim citizens should understand one thing.    It is a fact that all the votes of Hindus have not gone to the BJP.  Congress, Janta Dal, Communists and several other parties continue to get Hindu votes.  Only a minority of Hindus continue to fanatically support BJP. If you take the case of fringe outfits like VHP, Bajrang Dal etc, they have only a fraction of the support that BJP enjoys. The minorities need not consider these fringe groups as the representatives of Hindu or leaders of Hindu religion.

It should also not be construed that the ‘Trishul’ wielding saints who led the mob that destructed the Mosque are representative of Hindu religion or leaders.   No one can claim to be a representative of Hindu religion or leader of it.   Several saints, have opened various mutts and declared themselves as its leaders. It doesn’t mean that the religious or political leadership of Hindu religion lies with them.

It is true that the perpetrators of mosque demolition are Hindus.  But it doesn’t mean that the majority Hindus relished and enjoyed the act.   Most of the Hindus are peace loving people. They would like to have a Ram temple but certainly not by demolishing a mosque.

If the minority folks think that majority of the Hindus have perpetrated this act of ravage, that would only help the leadership of Hindu religion towards this fanatics.   There is no doubt that majority of Hindus would condemn this demolition and curse the perpetrators.  But in this case, the whole country has united in condemning this barbaric act.   Almost all the political parties have condemned it.

It is understandable that the demolition would be etched as a scar in the mind of a Muslims.   But, Muslims should not use this as a prism to view because it will help them in any political incident or any other issues. They should also not resort to violence or riots.   Any instance of violence would only turn into a fodder for Hindu extremists.   It would become a grave threat to the peace and secular fabric of this country.   Minorities should feel safe that the majority of Hindus are with them and sympathise with them.    Hindus also should be gracious towards minorities.

The demand of the Muslims that the mosque should be rebuilt on the same place is understandable.   But, such an emotional and hurried demand would further complicate the issue and would lead to various litigation's and issues.   It would be better for everyone who has stakes to wait for the Supreme Court verdict in this regard.  The coming together of Hindus and Muslims to resolve this issue together would resurrect India’s fallen pride.

IS PRIME MINISTER RESPONSIBLE?

"The Masjid has been demolished. Peace is being demolished"

The opposition parties have demanded the resignation of Prime Minister following the demolition of Babri Masjid.   It would not be a surprise, if such voices are heard in the congress camp as well.   Till this editorial goes to print, there is no clarity on this issue.  But let’s discuss the merits.

The main argument of the opposition parties is that had the Uttar Pradesh government had been dismissed earlier, this catastrophe could have been prevented and hence the Prime Minister is wholly responsible.  V P Singh is in the forefront of such demand.   I strongly believe that V P Singh doesn’t have any moral or political right to make such an argument. By joining hands with the BJP he tried to grab power.   He had indirectly helped the BJP in increasing its Lok Sabha tally.   He formed the cabinet with the help of BJP.   He went to the extent of proclaiming an amendment for taking possession of the disputed land in Ayodhya just to please the BJP & VHP.  So he dint realize that he was staring at a huge problem at that time;  It is ironic that being the person responsible for fomenting this problem he is now blaming Narasimma Rao.
Though we can ignore V P Singh’s demands, there are several others who are demanding the same.  Their main grudge is why the UP government was not dismissed before.   But one should imagine what would have happened, if the UP government was dismissed.   BJP would have become a martyr by losing a government for Ram Mandir, they would have claimed that just to appease the Muslims Lord Ram has been insulted by the Anti-Hindu Central government.  The BJP would have given a call for the Hindus to unite and throw away the anti-Hindu government.   Such a narrative would have been built by the entire Sangh Parivar.

Even a sizeable number of population would have opposed the dismissal of UP government.   In spite of the repeated assurances of the UP government and a sworn affidavit before the Supreme Court, why should the UP government be dismissed would have been the chorus.    These barbarians would have been glorified as saints.   Such a scenario would have resulted in these barbarians poking their nose in every aspects of administration and wreaked havoc.   This is why the Prime Minister carefully weighed all the options and refrained from dismissing the UP government.

But, now everyone would accept that the UP government should go. Now there would be no hesitation for anyone to condemn the cadres of VHP, RSS & Bajran Dal as savages.   This is an opportune and safe moment for the minorities and the secular thread for this country.

The Mosque could have been protected if the UP government was dismissed by the PM.  But the future of the minorities and secularism would have suffered a huge setback.  The delay in dismissal of UP government has resulted in the demolition of the Masjid, but has saved the future of minorities.  Further, the prime minister would not have imagined in his wildest dreams that the UP government would go to the extent of violating the sworn affidavit before the SC and its promises in this regard.  The central reserve forces were ready to be deployed in a moment’s notice.   But, the UP government obstinately refused its deployment.

By any stretch, it is not right on the part of opposition parties to shift the blame for the fiasco from the BJP to Prime Minister.

In case lets imagine the Prime Minister has resigned. Who will take the responsibility for the instability that would follow? Even, the congress party may implode due to its infighting. A minority government might be formed, and it may have survived for a short time and elections would have been called for.  The country is definitely not in a position to face polls.   While violence and hatred continue to spread, polls should be the last thought on our mind.

Let’s all hope for peace to be restored.   All the parties should cooperate with the government in this regard. Problems won’t vanish due to the resignation of PM.   But it may increase, if he resigns.

The Masjid has been demolished. Peace is being demolished.  But there is a sort of blind hope that things can be managed even now. Opposition parties should not do anything to damage this hope.

MAKING OF A 'GOONDA' - DIRECTED BY TAMIL NADU POLICE

I know V Anbalagan for 13 years, I have known him as a journalist and worked with him when he was in Nakkeeran as a Chief Reporter. For some journalists he is fearless and for some he is a fake journalist and now even an extortionist.

The opinion about Anbazhagan in the media industry is divided. He has friends and he has lots of enemies within the industry. Since I know him for so many years, my observation about him is that he can't be controlled. He has a mind of his own and will do what he wants to without bothering about the consequences.

I don't know if he is corrupt or not. But what I know is that he is the reason why the the 'high and mighty' got sleepless nights because of him filing RTI queries and complaints. He would create a flutter by splashing posters across Tamil Nadu with the photos and names of IAS officers accusing them of indulging in wrong doing.

I have had arguments with him regarding his style of journalism on many occasions and Anbazhagan will have his own justifications. But it's is this very attitude of his that seems to have landed him in trouble.

Complaint against TN Minister Velumani
On 25 April 2017, Anbazhagan filed a detailed complaint to the CBI, narrating various instances of bribery by the Minister of Local Administration S.P.Velumani. The very next day, he was arrested by Coimbatore District police based on the complaint of one Parthiban, Assistant Coimbatore Municipal Corporation (His name also figures in the complaint sent to the CBI) that Anbazhagan demanded Rs.2 lakh and criminally intimidated him.

Later in an attempt to ensure that Anbazhagan does not get bail, the FIR was altered and fresh section under the Scheduled Caste & Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 was added that Anbazhagan abused the complainant on the basis of provoking him by his caste.

Till now more than 25 cases have been slapped against him in various police stations in Coimbatore and Chennai. In all the cases the allegation against Anbazhagan is that he had demanded money and criminally intimidated the complainant.

What has raised many eyebrows is the fact that all the complainants are officials of Local Administration Department of the Tamil Nadu government which comes under TN Minister SP Velumani against whom Anbazhagan had filed a complaint with the CBI.

Every 15 minutes there was complaint filed by a Local Administration department officers
It is pertinent to note that S.P.Velumani had sent a legal notice to Anbazhagan with regard to an article written against him seeking Rs. 5 crore as compensation which was replied through an advocate. The Minister went on to file a lawsuit before the Hon'ble Madras High Court in CS No. 378 of 2017.

There seems to be a clear pattern and it’s obvious that the police was acting under pressure. The manner in which the complaints were lodged and FIR’s were registered in no time clearly shows that it was done to harass Anbazhagan. The timing and the identical nature of the complaints raises more question on the conduct of Tamil Nadu Police.

Complaint filed by a Town Planning Inspector

In all the six FIR's filed in Avadi police station the crime has been committed at the same time

Only names of the complainant changed all other contents remain the same

Ctrl C & Ctrl V = Names Changed

What is even more surprising and shocking is the way the police has been investigating this case. Never before in any case of criminal intimidation the police have sought the custody of an accused and the residence was searched. But in case of Anbazhagan the police took some unusual steps to seek custody of the accused for further investigation. Only god knows what they managed to investigate. But what we know is how Anbazhagan was systematically harassed; one day Coimbatore police will seek his custody and take him to Coimbatore for interrogation. The next day Chennai police will seek his custody and bring him back to Chennai.

If this is not harassment then what is? The complaints are also similar in nature and from the complaint it appears that Anbazhagan seems to have threatened various government servants within a span of one week.

First FIR against Anbazhagan
The FIR mentions Anbazhagan was at Parthiban's residence at 4 pm threatening him and demanding bribe

Most of the complaints mention that Anbazhagan visited their respective area and threatened government officials. The complaint by Parthiban mentions that Anbazhagan visited him at his residence in Coimbatore on 23-04-2017 and demanded Rs. 2 lakh bribe and threatened him with dire consequences if he fails to give him the money.

If Anbazhagan was in Coimbatore on 23rd April threatening Parthiban then I am very curious to know what Anbazhagan was doing at his residence in Poonamallee on the same day. Thanks to CCTV’s for exposing the lies, the cameras installed at Anbazhagan residence clearly shows that he was present in Chennai and that too at his residence.

CCTV: Anbazhagan leaves his residence on a bike to Coimbatore to threaten Parthiban?

CCTV: Anbazhagan returns home after threatening Parthiban in Coimbatore in an hour or so?

CCTV footage has been submitted by Anbazhagan's counsel

If this is not enough, yet another complaint by a contractor from Thiruverkadu claims that Anbazhagan visited his area at around 10.30 am on 22.04.2017 and demanded specifications about his contract and when he refused to oblige Anbazhagan started threatening the contractor. He also demanded bribe and later assaulted him. This case was slapped against him to detain Anbazhagan under the Goondas Act.

Anbazhagan threatened a contractor at 10.30 am in Thiruverkadu
According to the FIR Anbazhagan used a wooden log to attack the government contractor
WOW! What a cooked up story. CCTV footage of Chennai press club shows Anbazhagan gets dropped at the Press Club at around 10.51 am. So if you go by the FIR Anbazhagan was in Thiruverkadu at around 10.30 am threatening a government contractor and he managed to reach Chennai Press Club located in Chepauk in 21 minutes, which unless Anbazhagan is superman or he somehow managed a Chopper & clearance for a landing zone in Press Club.

Anbazhagan after threatening the contractor he took a chopper and landed at the Chennai Press Club at 10.51 AM?

Anbazhagan leaving the Chennai Press Club in his chopper?

Anbazhagan at the Chennai Press Club waiting

According to google map it takes nearly 52 minutes from Thiruverkadu to reach Chennai Press Club which is located at Chepauk. According to the FIR Anbazhagan was in Thiruverkadu threatening and assaulting a government contractor at 10.30 am and at 10.51 am he was at the Chennai Press Club. This is just amazing. Even Rajinikanth cant do something like this...
Add caption
This is just the tip of the iceberg to show how all these complaints are fake and were foisted with malacious intention to harass Anbazhagan. If this is not abuse of law then what is? And the highest of these atrocities is that Anbazhagan has been detained under GOONDAS Act, which is to prevent rowdy elements and anti-social elements from coming out on bail.

By any stretch of imagination Anbazhagan can never be termed a Goonda or a rowdy element. It appears as if the police officials, in order to please their political masters without any inhibition had detained an editor of a magazine under the Goondas Act.

If the police was serious about investigating the complaints in a free and fair manner they would have first gone through Anbazhagan's call records to know if the claims made by the complainants are true or false.

A perusal of the call records would clearly reveal the location of Anbazhagan and the CDR of Anbazhagan would reveal everything and will also clearly establish that he had never made the alleged threatening calls to the complainants demanding money.

Well one cannot expect that from the police when the orders are loud and clear. I am not shocked by the attitude of the police because they are doing what they are being told to do. But what is appalling is that several senior police officers who know about the sheer abuse of law and procedures remain a mute spectator and in fact were instrumental in the registration of this slew of cases.

What is shocking is the way media is reacting to the arrest of Anbazhagan. Except a few none of them are bothered about it and I feel that's because of their prejudices they hold against this man based on issues relating to press club and the ongoing ego battle between several journalist unions. So much so that one Tamil TV channel has gone on to brand him as Fake Journalist & extortionist just because Anbazhagan published a book exposing the wrong doings of the owners who are high profile politicians in the State.

A section of journalists who are deeply involved in the Press Club politics are relishing his arrest and went to the extent of pasting posters throughout the state which could not have been done without any sponsors. Without realizing that what happened to Anbazhagan can happen to them tomorrow.
Journalists have been questioning his credentials. Someone wanted to know if he is a real Journalist or a fake journalist. One particular news Tamil news channel calls him a fake journalist. Well it’s a complex question to answer because I am not sure who certifies a journalist. I am myself not sure if I am fake journalist or a true journalist. Who decides who is fake or genuine? In all these years I have not come across any competent authority who certifies journalists as fake and genuine.

If one may recall, Nakkeeran office was attacked by AIADMK goons for publishing a controversial cover story on Jaya. "Maatu Kari Thinnum Mami nan' (I am a beef eating bhramin) the magazine office came under attack for one whole day. The police were just mute spectators and the political terror continued for hours.

Not many journalists were ok with Nakkeeran's story and the headline but at the same time no one was justifying or relishing the state sponsored violence that was unleashed against the magazine office.

If Anbalagan had published something wrong there are laws and legal provisions to punish him. But harassing him by foisting false cases is just unacceptable and it's a brazen attempt to undermine the rule of law.

What happened to Anbazhagan is just the beginning. With the change in political scenario in the State it looks like its only going to get worse. Jaya was only filing defamation cases and now her cronies have taken this threat and intimidation to a new level. The only thing police has forgotten to mention in the FIR's is this...

As journalists our unity is our only strength and if this trend is allowed then any journalist can be easily branded as a Goonda in Tamil Nadu. Today, it’s Anbazhagan and tomorrow it may be YOU!!

ATHEIST FAROOK MURDER - SILENCE IS CRIMINAL

Why it is criminal to remain silent about Farook's gruesome murder

The brutal killing of 31-year-old Farook, an atheist, by a handful of misguided Muslim fundamentalists is yet another attack on the Muslim community.

Tamil Nadu's Muslim community should have no shame in accepting that there are a bunch of misguided souls who have become blood thirsty monsters in the name of religion.

The religion that teaches peace and tolerance is being time and again defamed by these ill- informed mascots of hate. The Tamil Nadu Muslim community is at the receiving end yet again because of the cowardly acts by a few individuals.

There cannot be any justification for any kind of killing and violence. No matter which religion the one who is being killed and the killer belongs to.

The cycle of violence seems to be never ending. From Auditor Ramesh to Sasikumar...it just never stops. A daily wage labour and a father of two is the latest victim. The motive behind the killing frivolous, Farook was killed because he was propagating Periyar's ideology.

Whenever such incidents happen, Muslim organizations routinely condem it with a statement and the matter ends there. In my opinion, beyond the lip service, these organizations are nothing but mute spectators. Its high time that the entire community takes up responsibility. It's time to question the thoughts of such bigots and stop their actions. It's time to put an end to the atrocities committed in the name of saving or protecting Islam.

The onus is on Muslim organisations now. These were the organisations that claim to be the champions of Muslims. These organisations 'valiantly fight' when movies portray Islam in a 'bad light'.  Where are they now when their own religion is being maligned by some misguided individuals?

Let's not forget how an umbrella of Muslim organizations got together forcing the makers of Actor Vijay starrer 'Thuppaki' to drop a few scenes of what they alleged was portrayal of Muslims in bad light.
These organisations were the ones who ensured that actor Kamal Hassan's Vishwaroopam movie never sees the light of the day unless their demands were met. They wanted all scenes that had any reference to their religion chopped off.

These organisations do not let go of any opportunity to protest and resist when even small remarks or mild criticism is made on Islam or the Muslim community.
Where is their outrage now?

Why are we not talking about it? What is happening in Coimbatore and Melayapalayam is a matter of huge concern. By not talking about it we are not doing any good to anyone, it has to be discussed, they have to identified, isolated & such acts should be stopped. One cannot allow a few motivated organizations to run amok.

Farook's father asks 'Why was my son killed and who gave them the authority to do so? He believed in an ideology and he was propagating it. What is harmful in that?'.
Do we have any answers to give this grieving father?

What possible explanations can be given to Farook's wife, his 10-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter?

When concerns are raised about those who are jailed in connection with Coimbatore blast case & demand their release on humanitarian grounds citing the ordeal their families have gone through during these years, here is a family that has been destroyed by our own. Their dreams shattered forever and what are we going to do about it?

Isn't it our responsibility to prevent such incidents from happening? Isn't it the responsibility of the 26 Muslim umbrella organizations from Tamil Nadu to create awareness & expose evil designs of such misguided groups? When will we isolate these fundamentalist organizations?

This madness has to stop and it has to STOP NOW.

Holy Quran says 'Lakum deenukum waliya deeni' which means "To you be your religion, and to me my religion..."

In simple terms it means 'Agree to disagree'. Why is it so difficult to abide by this?

Why are we allowing blood to flow on our streets? Why is the Muslim community in denial and turning a blind eye to such atrocities? It's time to bell the cat with the help of democratic forces. It's time to act.
It's time to rise against this intolerance & it's time to break our silence and stop these killers...

It's time to #FightTheFanatics...

Its all about art

AYYA!!! EN PERU MANICKAM…ENAKKU INNORU PER IRUKKU…

“My name is Manickam, I have another name…BAASHAA…” – The music plays and whistles blow all around…

This is one of Rajinikanth’s several famous dialogues that can set the silver screen on fire even today.

This is the story of a man who is all to set to work for the Superstar's upcoming blockbuster ‘Kabali’.

He is not an actor with any screen presence…he is someone who is always behind the screens & not many know about his story.

Meet Ramalingam - the art director….Oh wait! He has another name - Thangavel Ramalingam.

What Ramalingam has been doing silently is something outstanding. He is on a mission to revive one of the oldest art forms in Tamil Nadu known as ‘Therukuthu’ – Folk drama.

Hailing from a lesser known village called Peravur in Villipuram district, Ramalingam has served as an Art director in 10 Tamil films.

From ‘Attaikathhi’, ‘Vadacurry’ to ‘Madras – Ramalingam, has several achievements to flaunt in the Tamil film industry circles but what makes him proud is the fact that he has been instrumental in reviving the age old art of ‘Therukuthu’ in his village.

Interacting with 'Kabali' Director Pa. Ranjith, a close friend & a colleague
Peravur village once known as the hub of Tamil folk art has now vanished from the art map of India. Hailing from a family that was into folk art for generations together, Ramalingam, a student from the Government Fine Arts College in Chennai forayed into the world of cinema. Today, he has got a golden opportunity of working with one of the legends of Tamil cinema Superstar Rajnikanth - a chance that many in the industry long for.

But for Ramalingam, street play has been his passion and first love. He says “today the purest form of folk art is vanishing.”  He has revived his family run ‘Sri Muthalamman Nadaga Sabah’ a street folk art troupe named after his community god.  Inspired by his father Thangavel, who was a veteran folk artist…Ramalingam’s aim is to create awareness among the youth on the rich heritage of dramas.

Many in his Peravur village have quit performing on the streets as they consider that performing folk art on the streets demeaning. Ramalingam however, wants to prove them wrong and send across a message that it’s not something to be ashamed of. It is an art form which is his identity and more than that - his pride.

"After entering into the Tamil film industry I have become quite famous in my village and all I want to do is use my popularity to give a new lease of life for ‘Therukuthu’," says Ramalingam.

Ramalingam, has been quite successful in his endeavor. After the re-launch of his troupe ‘Sri Muthalamman Nadaga Sabha’ has been getting huge response in and around his village circle - so much so that a new troupe is getting ready to compete with his team.

Muthuperumal is an advocate
With Northern Tamil Nadu being gripped by caste politics and clashes, the youth seem to be getting drawn towards divisive politics. "I want them to focus on enhancing their skills…I want them to focus on education and folk art - all of which is our culture, tradition and identity," says Ramalingam.

2 months ago when he first performed on the streets after several years, Ramalingam couldn’t control his emotions. It was a ‘dream come true’ moment for him. He says, “I consider this the biggest achievement in my life. Even bigger than being identified as an art director.”
